With its motto "Innovate For Good" serving as a north star, this 36-hour in-person hackathon was powered by partner Orkes and backed by platinum partner Vonage. It set the stage for a whirlwind of creativity and camaraderie and was a testament to the power of creativity and community. The excitement began with the check-in of hackers and the distribution of welcome swag kits, setting the tone for the event. Light snacks and icebreakers fostered a sense of camaraderie among participants. The event kicked off with a keynote by powered-by Orkes, followed by insightful workshops from Orkes and Vonage. The Opening Ceremony marked the official start of the hackathon, and attendees dove into hacking as the 36-hour countdown began. A dinner under the open sky provided a refreshing break, followed by a GitHub workshop and giveaways. Stroom, the nutrition partner, shared their inspiring startup journey, fueling the spirit of entrepreneurship among participants.

Day 2: Nurturing Ideas, Fostering Collaboration

The second day was filled with learning opportunities and collaborative moments. At midnight, the first mentorship round commenced, guiding participants through the ideation stage. The first checkpoint encouraged teams to add basic project details, ensuring progress and accountability. Midnight snacks from Balaji and a playful "head, shoulders, knees, and toes" game added a fun twist to the late-night hacking sessions. The day began with a hearty breakfast, followed by workshops from partners Postman, MLH, and Logitech. Orkes took the stage to showcase their product, inspiring participants with its potential.

The second checkpoint prompted teams to submit their GitHub repos and select relevant partner tracks. Another round of mentoring focused on project implementation, preparing teams for the challenges ahead. Lunch provided a much-needed break, followed by mini-events from partners Orkes, Vonage, and MLH. Participants enjoyed light snacks and high tea as the day drew to a close while Orkes offered office hours at their booth. The evening concluded with the final mentorship round, providing teams with valuable feedback and guidance.

Day 3: Celebrating Innovation and Achievement

As the hackathon entered its final hours, teams worked tirelessly to put the finishing touches on their projects. The third checkpoint marked the last opportunity to ensure completeness. Midnight snacks and a coloring mini-event provided a brief respite from the intensity of hacking. Soft submission approached, and at 8 am, hacking officially concluded. Participants enjoyed a well-deserved breakfast before the judging process began.

The final lunch was a chance to relax and reflect on the journey. The top 10 teams were announced, and each had the opportunity to pitch their ideas on stage. The tension reached its peak as the final winners were judged and declared. The Closing Ceremony was a bittersweet moment as participants bid farewell to each other, capturing the memories of an unforgettable experience.

In addition to the hacking activities, Hack This Fall 2024 offered a diverse array of amenities and attractions to enhance the overall experience for participants. The event catered to various needs and interests, from comfortable sleeping areas providing a retreat for rest between coding sessions to engaging sponsor booths facilitating interactions with industry professionals and showcasing innovative products.

Fuel stations equipped with coffee machines ensured that participants remained energized and focused throughout the hackathon, while the fun-game corner provided a welcome opportunity for relaxation and socialization with board games, foosball, table tennis, carrom, etc. Creative expression flourished at the photo booths and doodle booths, allowing participants to capture memories and unleash their artistic flair. Excitement buzzed with the announcement of numerous giveaways, adding an element of anticipation and reward to the event. We all are well aware of the literal definition of what a hackathon is, but what exactly a hackathon is...A hackathon is a space where our crazy ideas shape into reality! Just imagine sitting in a place full of like-minded folks, brainstorming with a team, hacking for prolonged hours, testing and deploying, networking and making connections, building projects and much more. A space that comes with inclusive innovation drives an individual or teams to work together towards achieving collaborative goals. A space where hacks don't remain hacks but turn into mind-blowing projects or startup ideas.

Innovation is driven by collaboration, imagination, creativity and differing qualities or diversity that provide novel solutions to meaningful problems. Inclusive innovation is a concept that combines these fundamentals and creates space where individuals irrespective of their background come together to learn and grow. As said, diversity fuels creativity and innovation but diversity isn’t a tick box or check box exercise. It requires a commitment to bring change and live in an all-inclusive environment. One of the best examples of this is the technical communities and hackathons that aim to foster an inclusive environment where people of diverse backgrounds, genders, and cultures can collaborate and innovate for good. These communities are spaces with zero tolerance for discrimination or other exclusionary behavior. They value diversity and acknowledge unique, diverse perspectives leading to revolutionary ideas.

Hackathons are events that promote teamwork, creativity and problem-solving. In recent years hackathons have evolved in such a way that geographical boundaries do not limit inclusiveness. There are offline and online spaces where programmers, coders and tech enthusiasts convene to share knowledge, build solutions and inspire one another.

Hackathon is an excellent way of collaborating for the greater good and that is why diversity and inclusivity play a major role in hackathons in its many aspects to construct to a true hackathon experience.

A hackathon is a competitive event where individuals/teams together develop solutions. Learning is a 2-way street. One can seek guidance from experienced and in return can share their perspectives or ideas.

Innovation creativity and enhanced decision-making.

Diverse teams bring diverse perspectives, experiences and backgrounds as team members approach problems and tasks from various angles. This in turn leads to comprehensive and thoughtful decisions to solve the problem.

When put in situations of extreme pressure and stress diverse teams often adapt to such rapid change in the environment as there are people in the team who have different skills that benefit the team and make the difference.

Navigating the complexity of coding or project building becomes a comparatively easier process when seasoned developers act as guides. There are mentors who offer all the required support to those just starting their journey.

Acknowledging and celebrating achievements also gives a sense of belongingness. At hackathons, one gets to network and collaborate with like-minded folks and share stories of shared struggles. A spirit of technical expertise and inclusive innovation is shared.

Success here is not about having coding skills or winning the hackathon but about together building a welcoming environment fostering equal participation. Evidently, it is a task to address challenges that obstruct the inclusive environment and fostering of diverse perspectives but that is what Inclusive Innovation is all about, where everyone is sitting at the table and innovating for Good.

In the heart of Gandhinagar, India, from 3rd to 5th February 2023, a unique tech experience unfolded that brought together a diverse group of innovators, problem-solvers, and hackers to transform ideas into reality, embrace innovation, and celebrate the spirit of collaboration.

Hack This Fall 3.0, hosted at Karnavati University, was a 36-hour in-person hackathon marked a significant departure from its online predecessors. With the tagline "Innovate For Good" and an impressive lineup of sponsors, partners, and a record-breaking number of participants, this event left an indelible mark on everyone involved.

In this recap blog, we'll delve into the highlights, the 3-day journey, and the unique elements that made "Hack This Fall 3.0" a memorable experience.

The first and second editions of "Hack This Fall" were conducted online, but the third edition marked a significant change. It became the first-ever in-person edition, and the impact of this transition was palpable throughout the event. Participants had the unique opportunity to meet, collaborate, and learn from each other in a physical setting, fostering a tangible sense of community and camaraderie.

The day featured a unique MLH mini-event, a cup-stacking challenge, followed by the engaging Snyk Cyber Security Challenge. The final mentorship round wrapped up the day's activities.

As the soft submission deadline approached, excitement reached its peak. Hacking concluded at 8 a.m., and participants were rewarded with a well-deserved breakfast. The judging process began, where experts assessed the innovative projects. The winners were carefully chosen, and the Closing Ceremony marked the event's conclusion. Participants bid farewell to each other, capturing the memorable moments through photographs that would serve as cherished mementos.

In addition to the intense hacking sessions, Hack This Fall 3.0 offered several additional amenities to make the event comfortable and enjoyable. These included a steady supply of breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner, ensuring participants were well-fed throughout the hackathon.

Sleeping areas providing quick recharge and sponsor booths allowed participants to explore and engage with companies. Coffee machines energized everyone, and a fun game corner provided a relaxing break. Participants could also capture the memories of the event through photo booths, and many giveaways added an element of excitement to the overall experience.

Hack This Fall 3.0 Recap: A Remarkable Journey of Innovation, Collaboration & Experience

Hack This Fall began with a mindset of encouraging new hackers to build unique projects regardless of the tech or field; the only focus was to create something meaningful and enjoy building while also solving the shared struggles of our surroundings.

We hosted our first edition in 2020 which was an experiment as we were organizing a hackathon for the first time and it turned out to be a successful event. We received a great response from our community as we were joined by 500+ hackers from 170+ cities, who all ended up building 50+ projects. It was one of the first digital hackathons in the region during COVID times. To continue our mission and match the expectations of our community after season 1, we decided to start planning another edition.

Hack This Fall Season 2 was meant to exceed the digital hackathon experiences for our hacker community members and guess what, it went over the top. It was a 48 Hours Virtual Hackathon organized on Oct 22nd - Oct 24th, 2021. The hackathon experienced an outstanding attendance of 4500+ hackers joining us from 55+ countries across the globe which all ended up showcasing 320+ amazing ideas and project submissions.

Hack This Fall became an MLH member event, which means that 

 verified us as a high-quality event by evaluating the event’s progress in key areas such as sponsorship, marketing, and logistics. We also introduced our all-new tagline “Innovate For Good”. Hackers truly understood the value of our motto and showed their excellent piece of innovation and problem-solving skills.

Apart from having a great time hacking, our community got an opportunity to collaborate in so many meaningful ways. We use to have 

 hacker hangouts every week on our discord where we use to discuss various topics, share each other’s experiences and learn together. Such hacker connects, drives various valuable conversations which eventually helped our hackers to get more aware and understand things they didn’t know before.

One of the great things about Hack This Fall was its pre-event workshops, we ran over 45+ sessions on our Youtube on multiple domains and topics which could ultimately help hackers learn new technologies, build great ideas and share their solutions with the rest of the community. We covered subjects like Jamstack, Containers, Authentication, Blockchain, Azure, and so much more. With this, we wanted our hackers to be aware of all these before actually starting with the hackathon. And having these workshops way before the hackathon allowed them to give it some time and grasp it.

Hackers also had a lot of fun time participating in super cool mini-events we scheduled for them. This way, hackers get to take some time off from hacking and relax their minds to enjoy and have some chill. We did Hacker Hangouts to interact with other hackers participating, we also ran an MS Paint mini-event, where we followed along with Bob Ross himself. MLH ran a special Werewolf mini-event which was again an awesome one and lastly, we played Sketchful mini-event to draw and guess the same!

This year, we also initiated a new program named Hack This Fall Hackathon Evangelist. Evangelists are extended Hack This Fall team members who are passionate about Hackathons and Communities. These are the folks who actively spread awareness and encourage people to get involved in the hackathon space. Being a Hackathon Evangelist means that one is committed to bringing a change in their surrounding by helping others and contributing in a meaningful way. We onboarded over 100+ Evangelists and helped them add value to the community.

We encourage Inclusion and Diversity at the core of our community core and have various activities around the same to keep hackers engaged in a meaningful way. All in all, we wanted our hackers to not just participate but experience a hackathon in a true sense. And we managed to do that quite well. Hack This Fall is known for its experience and we want to make sure that people participate in a hackathon not just to win but to upskill, network, learn, build and share.

Lastly, would just want to conclude by mentioning that, Season 2 was such a blast and it leveled up the true hackathon digital experience for the hackers in the region. Hack This Fall 2.0 Recap 💡

Hack This Fall Season 1 was a 24 Hours Virtual Hackathon organized on Oct 31st - Nov 1st, 2020. We organized this event during the global COVID-19 crisis, when the entire world was suffering from a pandemic. The event allowed participants to join from the safety and comfort of their homes.

In Season 1, we were joined by 500+ superb hackers from 170+ cities, who all were motivated to build towards solving society’s everyday problems, and ended up building 50+ projects, which was in line with our motto i.e. “Build & Solve”. Hackers truly understood the value of our motto and showed their excellent piece of innovation and problem-solving skills. Not only this, we found hackers hacking individually and collaborating in a team, but this didn’t stop them from engaging with other hackers in a meaningful way.

While we are talking about hackathons and especially about Hack This Fall, it was not just limited to Coding and Building stuff. Hackers also had a ton of fun learning new skills and technologies. We hosted pre-hackathon speaker sessions where industry professionals were invited. They shared their knowledge about various domains like OpenSource, Game Development, BlockChain, Hackathons, DevRel, Web Technologies, Machine Learning, App Development, and whatnot; all these sessions were indeed so insightful for all our hackers.

While the hackers were busy building their hacks, we also arranged multiple mini-events for all, where anyone could join, relax and enjoy their presence at the hackathon. Some of the mini-events included “MS Paint Bob-Ross,” where we flaunted our painting skills as we painted along with Bob Ross himself. Additionally, we also had “Hacker Hangouts,” which essentially helped everyone know more about each other. We even played games like “Among Us” and “Space Team”, which was a ton of fun. Not only this, but we also had “Mentor Connect” sessions, where hackers could interact with mentors and get feedback on their ideas/hacks.

All in all, Season 1 was a huge success, thanks to all the fantastic hackers for joining and building with us. We couldn’t have made the process of running a hackathon at such a scale without the help & contribution of our elite panel of industry-leading speakers, experienced mentors, and righteous judges. The entire event ran smoothly like a cruise, thanks to all our sponsors and community partners, who helped us with their support and resources. Last but not least, kudos to our team, who worked dedicatedly for about 4+ months and put everything together.
